The Tulsa Equity Alliance Community Safety Crew empowers everyday community members with the knowledge and skills needed to foster a safer, more resilient Tulsa.
Through training, education, and direct response, we equip individuals to prevent harm, deescalate conflicts, and provide critical support in crisis & emergencies—ensuring that safety is a shared, communal responsibility, not just an institutional one.
The C.S.C. consists of crew members who have dedicated themselves to learning hard and soft skills, training other community members, and responding to events in our community. The idea is that if everyday community members are armed with safety knowledge and skills, our community will be safer and benefit because there are more individuals who can prevent harm, deescalate conflicts, respond in emergencies, and mitigate consequences during delays in public safety response times.
Areas of practice include, but are not limited to: understanding relational organizing; restorative justice practices; mental health awareness & first-aid; medical training & life-saving techniques; substance abuse harm reduction; and basic understanding of environmental extreme weather.
The Tulsa Equity Alliance Community Safety Teams— Medical (CMT), Social Behavior (SBT), and Weather (WxT)— are volunteer-led crews working to keep our communities safe, supported, and prepared. From emergency medical care and crisis de-escalation to severe weather monitoring and disaster response, these teams are trained to respond when it matters most. Each team plays a unique role, but all share a commitment to care, communication, and collective action in moments of need.
The Community Medical Team is a group of trained volunteer responders committed to keeping our community safe and supported in moments of crisis. From basic first aid and CPR to Narcan administration, AED use, and trauma response training like Stop the Bleed and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, CMT members build real-life skills to meet emergencies with calm, care, and confidence. We believe safety starts with us—and that every person empowered to act is a step toward a more prepared and resilient Tulsa.
The Social Behavior Team is a volunteer crew trained to respond to conflict and crisis with care, not punishment. Grounded in restorative justice, de-escalation, and mental health first aid, SBT members offer an alternative to traditional crisis response. They work to reduce harm, support people in distress, and attempt to connect those in crisis to the resources they need. By centering empathy, healing, and accountability, the SBT helps build a culture of safety rooted in community care.
The Community Weather Team is a group of trained volunteers dedicated to monitoring severe weather, reporting hazardous conditions, and supporting disaster response in real time. Equipped with weather spotting skills and an understanding of local risks, WxT members help keep neighbors informed and prepared before, during, and after storms. Whether alerting others to danger or assisting with community recovery, the WxT strengthens Tulsa’s ability to respond collectively to extreme weather events with care, communication, and coordination.
Volunteers are encouraged to expand their skills across teams, building well-rounded knowledge in areas like two-way radio use, situational awareness at public events, basic navigation, emergency preparedness, and crisis response protocols. Through hands-on training and shared experiences, members grow into trusted leaders who can support their neighbors in everything from natural disasters to public safety threats. If you're ready to step up for your community and grow your skillset, there's a place for you on the Safety Crew.
The C.S.C. is interested in spreading our knowledge and teaching others. If you think you or your org could benefit from education please reach out to us for training opportunities.
If being a member of the Community Safety Crew sounds interesting to you or you have skills to bring to the crew, please fill out a T.E.A. Form and an organizer will be in touch with you.

HOSTED BY: National Weather Service - Tulsa
DATE: Thursday, February 5, 2026
TIME: 6:00pm
ADDRESS: Billie A. Hall Public Safety Center, 602 W Morrow Rd, Sand Springs, OK 74063, USA
INFO:
Throughout eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas, trained and dedicated individuals monitor the skies around their communities during severe weather events. These storm spotters provide first-hand severe weather reports to their local officials, and to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, which are used to make critical warning decisions.
Being a storm spotter not only means dedication but also training. Each winter and spring the Tulsa office of the National Weather Service trains members of police & fire departments, emergency management officials, and amateur radio operators on spotting techniques. Typically, the training is coordinated by a local group (such as an emergency management agency) and a NWS meteorologist serves as the guest instructor. The goal of the training is not just to recognize tornadoes, but to have some understanding of storm structure, which in turn better prepares the spotter for the extreme and unusual circumstances. Other topics covered include an update on the latest NWS technology and procedures, ideas for organizing/coordinating spotter groups, severe weather reporting, and important safety considerations.
The training is free. All the classes are open to the public, and are conducted in-person at the specified hosting site. No pre-registration is required. Virtual training sessions WILL BE scheduled and posted in March and early April - ONLY those sessions WILL REQUIRE PRE-REGISTRATION.
